Chess Club:

Chess is one of the oldest board games in the world!  Children enjoy chess as a game. Yet, chess offers the means of teaching mental abilities used throughout life: concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, strategic planning, problem solving, visualization skills, creativity, and patience to name just a few.  Studies have shown that routine chess instruction has a positive influence on both numerical and verbal aptitudes.

Registration for Chess Jags is required.  There are 16 slots available per grade, grades 1-3.  The cost is $30.00 per semester.  Registration forms will be sent out on August 20th and it will be first come, first serve.  We will make an announcement when Chess Club is filled.

PHES Chess Jags, Grades 1-3,  will meet directly after school on Wednesdays, beginning September 5th.  Pick up will be in the front of the school at 4:00 pm.

Practices for Grades 4 and 5 are yet to be determined.  We will post information as soon as it is available.

Farm Club:
Mr. Todd's PHES Farm Club members will be open to 3rd grade spotlight students and all 4th and 5th grade students.  The purpose is to educate children and their families where their food comes from through Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE).  SAEs were developed by the National FFA organization. The activities have been scaffolded to match the students' abilities and our campus facilities.  As part of our agriculture program here at PHES, we fully integrate native species education with production, organic and sustainable development agricultural practices.
Our livestock program consists of projects involving laying hens, pigs, sheep, meat and dariy goats and bottle calves.  SAE livestock projects are available to Farm Club students based on grade and experience level.
Funding for our agricultural projects comes from various grants, donations, and revenue from our student ran Farmers' Market that sells breakfast and snack items each morning.

We take many field trips to various agriculture facilities. food processing plants, and nature related sites.
